Trip details
Fygou gorge – Vasiliki Strata
At the side of the road towards Omalos, we start our venture down the path that leads us to the entrance of the lush, smaller gorge of Fygou, a side gorge of Agia Irini. We are immersed in Mediterranean fragrances of wild sage, oregano and thyme as we hike down the rocky path amongst pine and cypress trees. Soon, the Fygou gorge merges with the Agia Irini gorge where we follow the riverbed up towards the village. We pass the ruins of small houses, once inhabited by rebels during the resistance against the Turks. From here, we follow the gentle, uphill, old paved mule-track, Vasiliki Strata, that was once the only connection between these mountain villages. Going up, we are treated to breathtaking views towards the South coast, the surrounding mountains and a wide variety of wild vegetation. The last part of the path, takes us back to our starting point.
