We drive to our starting point, the mountain village of Anopolis, on the mountain plain, high above the Libyan sea. The drive there from Chania town takes approx 2hrs.
After picking up our e-bikes from the main village square, we follow the impressive road westwards for approx 8.5km, over the stunning Aradena bridge. From here we have an amazing view down into the narrow gorge from 138m above the gorge floor! The views are outstanding!
We continue to the end of the road and Agios Ioannis hamlet. Here, we leave our bikes for the time being, as we take the well-marked hiking trail that takes us to the ‘balcony’ of Kakos Poros. A gentle hike down for approx. 40mins (oneway), from where we are treated to stunning views of the South Coast!
After a short break, we follow the same path back to Agios Ioannis, where a home cooked meal awaits us. Then, we pick up our e-bikes once again and head (downhill) back to Anopolis, where we visit a local herb producer and his farm. We learn all about the wild, medicinal herbs of Crete and how they have been used over the years in local remedies.
Back to our car in the afternoon and drive back to Chania.
