I’ve just had a week’s holiday in Western Crete as part of a group of 13 who were taken on five different half-day hikes, all led by Sophia and who was very ably assisted by Adonis. I am confident that I speak for everyone in our group when I say we have had the most fantastic and authentic experience of the nature and landscape of Western Crete thanks to Sophia’s expert guidance (early May 2025). She was able to provide poles and - luckily not needed - waterproofs for those who’d forgotten them, and en route on the hikes magically produced snacks such as just-picked oranges and loquats, dried fruit, ‘wine’ biscuits and a sesame snap-type snack which could’ve kept you going for hours! Sophia pointed out to us the wild flowers, the geological features, the griffon vultures soaring above the gorge, and shared with us the history of Crete that had seen occupation by the Venetians, the Ottomans and most recently, the Nazis during WW2. Best of all, at the end of each hike we visited a local taverna to feast on traditional Cretan cuisine. Unforgettable Private Hiking Adventure in Crete with Evenos Our private guided hiking trip through SW Crete was easily the highlight of our entire visit to Greece. From the first step on the trail to the last breathtaking overlook, the experience was authentic, enriching, and beautifully tailored to our pace and interests. Our local guide, Sophia, was exceptional—knowledgeable, passionate, and incredibly friendly. She wasn’t just leading a hike; she was telling the story of Crete through its mountains, gorges, and hidden paths. She shared insights on the island’s flora, fauna, mythology, and wartime history in a way that brought the landscape to life. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and her attention to safety and comfort never wavered. The Route - We explored parts of the coastline from Elafonissi to Imbros, ventured off the beaten path into the plains of Anopoli and hiked up and down gorges. The scenery was spectacular — dramatic cliffs, beautiful shorelines and beaches and wild herbs scenting the air. Sophia adjusted the route based on our fitness level and interests, which made it feel both challenging and perfectly suited. Cultural Touches - Sophia has obviously cultivated relationships with many of the locals along the route so that at every stop we were treated to wonderful hospitality. All of the accommodations were in locally owned and operated hotels. It was clear that these were places the guide genuinely cared about supporting. We also appreciated Sophia introducing us to so many amazing Greek dishes. Gear & Organization - Everything was thoughtfully prepared: transportation to and from the trailhead, water, snacks, trekking poles, and even spare gear. Communication before the hike was smooth, and we appreciated how Sophia checked in with us every day to make sure we were getting what we wanted out of the experience, that we weren’t moving to slowly or too quickly, etc. If you're looking to connect with Crete beyond the beaches and resorts, this is it. Sophia took us, 3 women in our 70s on a 7 days trek in the south of Crete. She guided us, and one day provided us with self guiding package due to previous commitment. Every detail was taken care of. The hikes were beautiful and suited our abilities and she provided support when needed and pointed out interesting plants and sites. She was also a pleasant companion.
